Improved signage on the N3 Toll Route

Travelling along the N3 Toll Route between Heidelberg and Cedara should be even more convenient with the installation of ten Variable Message Signs (VMS) at key points along the route.

These strategically located signs aim to help motorists make informed decisions based on a variety of eventualities that could take place along the Route. Motorists will be given the benefit of foresight to proceed with great caution, stop for a rest or opt to take an alternative road in the event of any incident or weather conditions that could impede the normal flow of traffic.

Attempted ATM bombing a concern

Pietermartizburg Bomb Squad, Ladysmith Dog Unit and Bergville police were placed on full alert, when eight armed men attempted to bomb an ATM in Tathem Street, Bergville on Saturday morning.

According to police on the scene, the robbers first fired several shots into the machine and placed a stick of explosives into the body of the ATM.

It is believed that the fuse would not ignite and according to a source, the fuse can only be ignited by an electrical spark. "You can make a huge fire around the fuse and nothing will happen," added the source.

"They then used an AK 47 to fire a hole into the ATM, wherein they then placed explosives," said Captain Charmaine Struwig.

The group then fled empty-handed in a powder-blue Toyota Conquest with false registration plates.

One Year Old Missing

Bergville Police are baffled about the unexplainable disappearance of one year-old Awanda Londeka Nene from her home which is situated on Eastwood Farm, Bergville.

"How can a one-year just disappear, without leaving any evidence of existents," said investigating officer Inspector Willem Pretorius. According to the Bergville police at around five o’clock that afternoon on July 30, the mother realized that her child was gone. "I had stepped into the hut and left Awanda playing with the other children, just a few steps away form the main hut’s door, when my sister come in and told me that Awanda is gone," said Nene, during an interview with the Ladysmith Herald.

According to the investigating officer Pretorius, there was no evidence of the child’s blood that could indicate that the child had been killed or bitten and drag away by an animal and no-sign of a struggle.

Prophet Maduna’s Harare Hell Recounted

A self-styled Prophet of God, Eric Maduna has had his "day in hell" when he was detained in Harare recently.

He had gone to the Zimbabwean capital to deliver a divine message to the leaders and to warn them of many hardships. But instead, officials detained him for an entire day before ordering him out of the country.

"I had been sent to Harare to speak to leaders to warn them about my vision from God, about the hardships that is going to bring Africa and its people to their knees," said Maduna. But he said the leaders were not prepared to meet him and when he insisted, he was taken into custody.

"People are going to suffer and they need to know that God will change all, if they only listen," said Maduna.

"Knobkerrie" Is Behind Bars

Mondli Shabalala, also known as the Knobkerrie car thief, was recently sentenced in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court to 17 years’ imprisonment for armed robbery. According to the Ladysmith police, this was an unusual crime in which the hijacker had armed himself with a knobkerrie and home-made knife.

Shabalala and his accomplice entered the Ladysmith Crematorium in Cemetery Road on 18 January 2006.

"Mondli's accomplice remained at the entrance of the door while he went into the office. He then asked the employee and his friend for work," said Captain Charmaine Struwig.

After hearing that there were no vacancies, Mondli and his accomplice left only to return minutes later.

School Puts Up R10 000 Reward For MXit Defamation List

Several businessmen and individuals from Ladysmith are named in defamatory lists which were recently aired on MXit. This has gained the wrath of the school principal who has put up a reward of R10 000.

It is believed that there are approximately 20 lists that have been circulated on the MXit chat rooms. From ’Super bi**hes to slutz’, the lists continues. According to recent media reports, MXit is busy investigating the messages and is in the process of having it removed. The police said that no arrests have been made and no cases were opened with regards to the MXit list. "Anyone who is detrimentally affected by the contents of the MXit lists can seek both criminal and civil recourses," said Captain Charmaine Struwig.

With criminal recourse a case of crimen injuria can be opened, while with civil recourse a civil claim for defamation of character can be lodged. On investigating further, it has come to the Ladysmith Herald’s attention that the culprits behind the MXit list scams are allegedly pupils from the Ladysmith Secondary School.
