Victim lives in fear

Siyabonga is living in fear and has fled his home in Ezakheni Section D, after his brother’s friend was brutally stabbed to death at his home on Christmas Day.

According to Siyabonga, his brother had returned with a friend from Steadville and spent most of the day relaxing, when a group of men cornered them in the yard.

"It was really scary, these men just came into the yard and started to fight with us," said Siyabonga. A fistfight allegedly ensued between the men, which resulted in Siyabonga’s friend being stabbed to death. "We just ran from the house as they gave chase." Siyabonga added that he had gone into hiding and later found out that two of his houses, situated in Section D, were burnt to the ground, allegedly by his attackers.

According to the police cases have been opened and they are investigating the matter.

Coming together at St Chad's

Thousands of people flocked to St Chad’s Sports Ground to witness the pilot project ’Siyazenzela’ being launched.

The purpose of the project is to alleviate poverty by providing employment opportunities to communities that collect and manage waste within their living environment. This initiative will also assist the municipality by expanding the waste management service to areas that are currently not being serviced. MEC for Transport Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Bheki Cele opened the program and welcomed all to the historical event.

The training programme included life-skills, waste handling and supervisory training.

Final Call For The Renewal Of Firearm Licences

In terms of the transitional provisions of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000), the period in which firearm licences may be renewed is nearing an end.

The South African Police Service commenced with the renewal of firearm licences in January 2005 and the final phase for the renewal of firearm licences ends on 31 March 2009.

The last group of people whose birthday falls within the period of 1 October to 31 December, have only until 31 March 2009 to submit their applications for the renewal to the Designated Firearms Officer situated in the area where they reside. "I urge those persons who have not submitted their renewal applications to do so as soon as possible and not to wait until the last day.

Angry mob storms Station

About 200 community members surrounded the Ezakheni Section C police station, demanding that two brutally beaten suspects be detained.

The Police Station gates had to be closed for a while as the community members all wanted to gain entry to the police charge office. "We are not going home, today," said one of the police officers, who shut the main gate to keep the mob at bay. The community members shouted at the police that the two men were linked to the brutal killings that had been occurring in Ezakheni Section C area. People have been living in fear for the last two weeks, as murders took place on a daily basis. "The police must lock them away, free them and we will come after the police," said another member of the mob.

The foul smell of blood lingered in the charge office, as police called for medical assistance for the two men.

Gunned down cop dies

Ladysmith police are riddled with shock, after the tragic killing of one of their senior members on Monday morning. It is believed that the police officer attempted to stop an armed robbery in Murchison Street.

It is alleged that the brave officer, whose identity was not released to this newspaper at the time of going to press, had been on his way to work, when he walked in on a robbery in progress. It is further believed that the police officer tried to intervene, but was fatally shot.

Ladysmith SAPS Director Nkomonde, another police member and a member of the Ladysmith community were at the officer’s side moments before he died. Though unconfirmed, it is believed that three of the men responsible, were arrested, and one shot dead in a gun battle in the lower CBD area.

ATM scammer cons pensioner

According to the local police a case involving a pensioner who had been approached at an ATM by a neatly dressed woman claiming to be a police officer, has been opened.

"She warned the pensioner to keep his money safe, offering an envelope in which to seal his newly drawn money and bank card," said Captain Charmaine Struwig. It is believed that the well dressed police officer then accompanied the pensioner to a white vehicle which he assumed was a police vehicle. The pensioner claims that the police officer handled the envelope for a few moments and handed it back to the pensioner and the "police vehicle" drove off.

"Upon opening the envelope, the pensioner found only blank paper inside. His money and bank card were missing and so were the "police officers". Video footage shows that the con-artist spent hours standing around at the ATM before choosing her target.

Lucky to be alive

A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by the police, after seven people were injured when the taxi they had been travelling in veered off the road and collided into the low rise bridge called Bellspruit on Saturday evening.

According to the police it is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle, two people were seriously injured and five sustained slight injuries. Emergency personnel and Public Safety officers worked tirelesly at the scene to free trapped passengers.

It has been a challenging year for all our pupils, facing troubled scenarios like drug abuse, alcohol abuse and the misuse of cellphones and pornographic material amongst the youth of today. Despite all of this ML Sultan is still a cut above the rest," addressed Principal Ramkhelawan to parents, family members and friends at a packed Civic Hall, during their Achiever’s Day.

In his speech Principal Ramkhelawan congratulated his pupils for extending a positive image of the school and bid a sad, but fond farewell to his grade 7s, as they embark on their high school journey.'
