R27.5 million worth of mandrax power found

A staggering R27.5 million worth of mandrax powder and narcotic chemicals were discovered and seized by the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit, on a farm nine kilometres outside Ladysmith, on Sunday morning-making this one of the biggest drug busts for police in a rural area.

The undercover operation took almost three months to complete, as police flocked down to a homemade laboratory. The small manufacturing plant, situated on the Rosedale Farm, had been cooking up Madrax tablets. According to the unit, one of the sheds had been found with over 230 kilograms of mandrax powder. Mandrax tablets retail for approximately R45 on the street. Police discovered several containers, filled with hundreds of litres of chemicals to make a further 75 kilograms of mandrax powder.

Senior Superintendent Hennie Laatz, head of the investigations at Pietermaritzburg's Organised Crime Unit, reported that the information given to the unit disclosed that the drugs were being made in the Colenso and Ladysmith area.

Snow fall was reporter in parts of the Eastern Free State and the area around the Northern Drakensberg.

Reenen, together with sleet, have made driving conditions dangerous, with limited visibility and a slippery road surface.

The AA urges motorists to be extra carefull while driving on affected roads. " Motorists are advised to reduce speed significantly, keep their headlights on, and increase following distance to at least ten seconds in the slippery conditions,"said Gary Ronald, spokesperson for the AA.

Poachers target livestock for food

Farmers in the Elandslaagte area in Ladysmith are worried. According to farmers, poachers are brustally attacking their cattle for meat.

"I can't describe the feeling - when you discover a herd that had escaped these men - their flesh had been ripped opened by the pangs and axes that were used to bring the animals to the ground," said Riaan Pieters, one of the farmers. Previously, six cows of Pieter's herd of cattle were being treated for their severe wounds, caused by the brutal attack. "These animals don't have a voice; I can't even imagine the trauma these animals have to go thriough, as they are being slaughtered alive." Pieters said the stock theft unit are investigating the incidents that have seen pigs, chickens and sheep massacred.

According to Riaan, the Elandslaate police and members of the stock theft unit have been in the area, not only are cattle being slaughtered, but chickens, pigs and sheep.

Annual biker gathering

The spectacular Central Drakensberg echoed with the thunderous BMW motorcyclists, as over 450 riders and their family come wheeling into Champagne Sport Resorts for the annual BMW Biker Gathering.

"This is not only a weekend dedicated to boys and their great set of wheels, but fun for the whole family," said General Manager of BMW Motorrad, Mr. Lacman. The BMW Gathering has already held six gatherings, but this being the second time, returning to the central, scenic route of the Drakensberg.

"The nature setting is just the sort of thing we look for, not only can the family enjoy the stunning view of the Drankensberg, but the mapping out of on-road and off-road riding routes are the biggest attraction.

Help business get their own back

A Ladysmith business is desperate to get back their computer equipment.

The company, Baker Kharva Chateered Accountants, situated in 23 Walton Street, said they suffered a huge loss after the company premises were broken into.

Over R30 000 worth of computer boxes, flash drives and a phone was stolen.

Doctor attacks nurse - claim

A doctor who allegedly assaulted a nurse at the Ladysmith Provincial Hospital has been arrested. The nurse was allegedly attacked by the doctor and says she is now living in fear following the incident which occurred on 24 March.

The nurse says she was unable to get any recourse from hospital management and decided to go the legal route by reporting the incident to the police.

She reported her case recently and the report is now in the possession of the Ladysmith Herald.
